Approaching God with Awe

Today’s Tidbit: “This all lies within the will of God.” Henry V 1.2.290

I read an article in “Discipleship Journal” by “Tim Muchlhoff, entitled “Return to Awe”. In it, Tim describes his change in his prayer life from one of being at ease and of praying for the needs of family and friends, as well as his own; to one of focusing on God’s majesty and who He really is. He makes the point that he needed to “invigorate his prayers with a focus on God’s majesty”. And “Moses trembled when he though of God; I thought of God and was comforted. Moses was awestruck; I was at ease.” He explained we need to approach God with a sense of awe and wonder. Prayer is not “an enterprise to be entered into lightly”.

He got me thinking about my own prayer life. I, too often, pray when I am getting ready for the day, or when I am driving in my car. While there isn’t anything wrong with that, I agree with the article when it points out I do need to focus on who God is. I need to pay attention when praying, not allow myself to be distracted. Some days I will need to focus just on the majesty and holiness of God. The author tells of times he has been prompted to just “rest in the awesomeness of God today”. He says he spends time being still and knowing God, as in Psalm 46. He says his prayer time has now become an experience in learning how to approach God with “awe and intimacy”.

His article lists several passages to help get a balanced view of God. Psalm 113:4-6, Isaiah 55:8-9, Acts 17:24-25, Isaiah 49:15-16, Luke 12:6-7, Romans 8:15, and Psalm 95:3,6-7. The magazine asks the question:” Do your prayers tend more toward informality or toward awe?” This article really made me stop and think about how I pray and when I pray.

My goal for the fall is to develop a prayer life that incorporates what this article talks about. I want to develop the awe Moses had when approaching God, while at the same time knowing I can approach God as my father. Have you taken time lately to reflect on the awesomeness of God?

Blessings!
