Friday Night Fun
Today’s Tidbit: The term cousin has a much broader use in Shakespeare than today. We use the term to define the relationship between the children of brothers and sisters (first cousins) and also for the children of first cousins (second cousin, or first cousin once removed) and their children. Shakespeare used the term for any relative beyond the immediate family, both for blood relatives and relatives through marriage. It was also often used as a term of affection between equal people who are not relatives at all, such as monarchs of different countries. (The Shakespeare Miscellany page 150)
Friday night may have seemed rainy and dreary, but in Northville it was a night of great excitement. My niece, Katie, was on homecoming court. We went to the parade in downtown Northville, and to the game, of course. It wasn’t raining during the parade. (My youngest niece, 4 year old Hannah, thought the parade was the best part of the night. The kids on the floats threw candy to her as they passed by. She had quite a haul!)
It started to rain a bit as we arrived at the game. We had seats on the fifty yard line (by we, I mean my brother, my sister in law, her parents, her niece, my sister, my parents, me, my sister’s 3 daughters, and Katie’s brother Colin). It was a great cheering section for Katie. Her brother Evan is on the football team, so he wasn’t sitting with us. The rain sort of stopped about half time, about the same time as the P.A. system went out. (The pompon squad did a great job of doing a routine without any music!) But, everything went on as planned. Each member of the court was escorted by their parents. They were lined up in from of the fifty yard line. Each girl was given a box with a rose in it. The girl with the white rose was the queen. (So it really didn’t matter if there was no P.A. system!) Of course, our Katie had the white rose! It was so fun to watch all of the excitement on the field, and be proud of the fact that the girl everyone was congratulating belonged to us. We all enjoyed the evening, even if the home team did lose the game!
I hope you enjoyed your weekend as much as we did!
Blessings!
